NBA Playoffs: Sorry Lebron - Better Luck Next Year!

6/19/2015

Congratulations, Golden State!

Picture
The Golden State Warriors did a great job in this years playoffs.  In fact all the teams did; it was an exciting playoff season, with interesting storylines.

The two biggest stories are of Stephen Curry of the Warriors, and Lebron James of the Cavs.  They battled against each other; only one can win.
At the start of the series, it looked like the Cavs really had a chance.  They were scoring, they were defending, and Lebron James was amazing.  But over the final few games, it became clear that the warriors could play at a faster pace.    They wore out the Cavaliers.   The Warriors like to use a strategy called 'small ball' where they have only one, or even no true big man on the court.  But they can run, and they can shoot - and that is why they were the scoring champs in the regular season.

Curry was League MVP During the Regular Season

Stephen Curry was also the league MVP during the regular season - and not Lebron James.  In some ways, Lebron's accomplishments in the playoffs were just as impressive as if he had won it all; because the Cav's were not even expected to make the playoffs.  They started the year off badly.  But they just got better and better.   Yet, just when they seemed to have all pieces fitting together, they lost two of their starting five for final series.  It is hard to come back from that.

Lebron is unstoppable.  So the Warriors decided to let him score, let him do his thing, let him get tired... and they focused on the rest of the team.  Lebron, at 280, just cannot run at NBA pace for an entire series if the team defending knows how to play him.

Prospects for Next Year

We here at GDL believe that next year, it will be the same two teams in the finals - and if the Cavs are healthy, they will have more firepower.  They might need to upgrade one guard position - other than that, both teams are complete and should compete very well  next year.

Patriots Versus the Seahawks!

This should be a very exciting super bowl - which does not always happen.  The Seahawks have shown strong scoring ability when under pressure.   Weather permitting, it should be a great game.
Hovering over any football discussion right now are the issues of Deflategate.   The coach of the Patriots,
Bill Belichick, and the Quarterback of the team, Tom Brady, are denying involvement and trying to minimise the issue.  All this is doing is hurting the team, and hurting their reputations.  Every quarterback in the NFL carefully adjusts the characteristics of the game balls - this has been done for a long time.  It would seem like the NFL will give some kind of penalty to the Patriots.   The Patriots low fumble rate appears to be statistically almost impossible - here is one analysis.

What we are wondering is that the Patriots might now have a big disadvantage in the Super Bowl.  A team that is consistently used to under-inflated balls, might be at a disadvantage in the super bowl with balls that are correctly inflated; they won't be used to it.  And it might also be a distraction for them.  So this is all to the Seahawks advantage.

CNN did a good summary of Deflategate, SNL did a skit about Deflategate:

World Cup - It Was A Good Run While it Lasted

Team USA loses 2-1 to Belgium

PictureAnother Howard Save!
It was an entertaining game from start to finish, but the US lost to Belgium today in the World cup.

Tim Howard saved goal after goal, and seemed invincible.  But in the end, the US lost, in overtime.  The team played its heart out, in Brasil, making it to the final 16.   Belgium will not face Lionel Messi, and Argentina.

Howard had 16 saves - the most of any goalkeeper since 1966.

The game was tied at 0-0, causing over time.   Belgium scored  quickly - twice - in the first 5 minutes.   The US fought back valiantly, able to finally score  - but not enough to tie or win.

US fans were proud of their team!

Clearly the US has a strong defense but needs to improve on offense.  Offense and defense feed each other; if you offense is weak, then you spend all your time defending your goal - and that will have bad consequences.

The TV ratings for the world cup were higher in the US than the NBA finals or the World Series - which is impressive.   Soccer really is the world's sport.   This popularity has several causes including strong Hispanic viewing, popularity amongst 'Millenials', and being in the same time zone as the US.  This will help soccer in the US at all levels.  Plus this year the world cup has had more scoring than usual, which adds to the excitement.

Fans sensed that this US team had grit, determination, and confidence - so the sky is the limit now.  The days are long gone when the US was considered to have no chance in the world cup - now, it is just a matter of time!

NCAA Finals - Huskies or Wildcats?

4/6/2014

Who Will Win Monday Night, Kentucky or uConn?

We had a couple of great games on Saturday.   Florida lost to uConn, and Wisconsin lost to Kentucky.  To the finals matchup on Monday night will be between the Kentucky Wildcats, and the Connecticut Huskies.

Who do you prefer?

We like the Huskies, partly because the Wildcats seem to be more one-dimensional.  That is why they had a fair amount of losses during the year.  They slash to the basket well, but that kind of aggressiveness seems to cover up for weakness in other parts of their game, such as outside shooting.  But they do seem to shoot the 3 under pressure quite well.
The Huskies have more experience but that seems to be less and less of a factor, as these Wildcats have really matured as the tournament has progressed.

The game will be televised live on CBS, Monday night at 6pm PST.  Bring your laptop or tablet and have our home page up, so you can participate in the Live, GLOBAL chat during the game!

You can find out more about the NCAA finals at the the NCAA Website.

Final Four Time!

March Madness is Down to the Final Four Teams!

Now is when it gets exciting!   We are down to the final four teams.

The schedule:

Florida Gators Vs the Connecticut Huskies, Saturday April 5 at 3:09PM PST

Wisconsin Badgers Vs Kentucky Wildcats, Saturday April 5 at 5:49PM PST

Florida came into the tournament ranked 1st; Connecticut ranked 7th.  Wisconsin was ranked #2, and Kentucky 8th.  So we have the potential for the final to be the #1 and #2 seeds.   But all four of these teams are very skilled; any of them could make the final.
There are some basic themes; UConn has a 'never say die' attitude, Florida has experience, Kentucky is gaining experience, and Wisconsin has played the most flawless basketball of the tournament.   Kentucky is interesting in that all 5 starters are freshman; this is very rare.

Who do you pick?

Florida beat the Wildcats during the regular season so they have the psychological edge; but Kentucky is looking for revenge.   Our pick here at GameDayLive.com is for a final of Florida Vs Kentucky, with Florida's experience giving them a slight edge, as they take the national championship!
